Process & Practice with David Ellingsen

Thank you so much to everyone who attended our social event on Sunday, April 28 at Mansons Hall.  This gathering featured a presentation by Cortes-born photographer and educator David Ellingsen entitled "Process and Practice."  David is an inspiring artist, speaker and teacher and we were pleased and privileged to host his excellent talk.

During this event, David combined creative and practical topics that are relevant to artists working in any medium.  He offered a two-part presentation with lots of time for Q+A, including a discussion of his creative process for taking photographs when developing an exhibition project, and a short seminar on a practical concern for many artists today, how to successfully document artwork using a mobile phone.  David also fielded many questions from Cortes Island artists about how to approach the challenge of marketing or monetizing our creations, and brought to our awareness some of the many opportunities for artists that are emerging in the new distributed digital economy.

Thank you David, for spending your valuable time with us on Sunday.  It was inspiring, enjoyable and informative.

The Gallery's first social art event of the season was held in the Pioneer Room at Mansons Hall on April 20th.  We saw an excellent turnout of Cortes residents who came to watch Mel Williamson from Salt Spring Island present a "free up your brush" painting demonstration.  Mel also offered a slide show that highlighted the Old Masters' techniques from which she draws the inspiration for her style of painting, which she calls "loose realism".  It was an informative and fun afternoon - thank you to all the folks who attended.
